Frankfurt (Germany), 7 Sept. (LaPresse) – The AfD has won a clear victory in the regional elections in Saxony-Anhalt, beating the CDU led by outgoing Governor Sven Schulze, but failing to secure an absolute majority. According to figures released overnight by the regional electoral commission, the party led by its lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund secured 43.8 per cent of the vote, compared with 17.2 per cent for the CDU. The AfD is classified by the Saxony-Anhalt Office for the Protection of the Constitution as a ‘definitely far-right’ party. Also entering the Magdeburg Parliament are the SPD, with 9.3 per cent, the Greens with 8.9 per cent, Die Linke with 8.6 per cent and the BSW with 5.3 per cent. The FDP, however, remained at 2.6 per cent, failing to clear the threshold required to win seats and thus leaving the regional parliament. Siegmund also secured a direct mandate in his constituency. In the Genthin constituency, according to preliminary results released by the Regional Statistical Office in Halle, the AfD candidate won 49 per cent of the vote, clearly outstripping Thomas Staudt of the CDU, who secured 24 per cent. In 2021, it was Staudt who won the direct seat in the constituency, with 31.3 per cent of the vote, whilst Siegmund came second with 26.6 per cent.
