This is the fastest-spreading outbreak ever recorded. The governor of the north-western province of Sud-Ubangi, Jean-Rene Galekwa Vundawe, stated in a note on Thursday that laboratory tests carried out by the Congo’s national research institute had detected the Bundibugyo virus – the rare strain of Ebola responsible for the current outbreak – in a sample. Local media reported the news on Friday. South Ubangi is the seventh province to be affected by the Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo. According to the latest government figures, as of Wednesday, 6,942 cases and 3,349 deaths had been reported.
