Madrid (Spain), 15 Sep. (LaPresse) – “We must do more for prevention, to prevent what happened” in Ceuta “from happening again.” This was stated by the European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, speaking to the European Parliament plenary in the debate on the crisis in Ceuta. With the Pact on Migration and Asylum, “we have opened a new chapter with fair but firm rules,” “the results are there,” Brunner continued, citing a “significant reduction in irregular arrivals” and an increase in repatriations. “The repatriation system now works much better, they are close to 30%, even if it is not enough.” “Europe has made significant strides to address illegal migration and regain control, but Ceuta’s images demonstrate that we must redouble our efforts both among traffickers and those who want to emigrate,” and “reassure our citizens,” the commissioner remarked.
