Just five years ago, the ratio was one in 167. Among pregnant women, the prevalence is one in 50. The government says it is stepping up screening and treatment programmes to tackle the surge in new HIV infections, which, according to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), have increased twelvefold over the last 15 years in the country.
