In the capital, he said, the CDU’s lead candidate, Stephan Evers, “led the CDU to a respectable result” in a very difficult situation. Merz then thanked the CDU activists and supporters who had been involved in the election campaign across the country, “in some cases under very difficult conditions, not least because there was no tailwind from Berlin”.
