Frankfurt (Germany), 25 Sept. (LaPresse) – The Bundestag has approved the CDU-CSU-SPD government’s ‘fuel discount’. All that remains is the Bundesrat’s approval – which is considered a formality – for the measure to come into force on 1 October and remain in effect until the end of December. Energy taxes on petrol and diesel will fall by 14.04 cents per litre. Taking VAT into account, the total reduction will be 16.7 cents, or approximately 17 cents. Petrol stations are not obliged to pass on the full reduction, although prices are expected to start falling rapidly from 1 October. The government anticipates a shortfall in tax revenue of 2.485 billion euros, half of which will be borne by the Länder. For the average motorist, the saving over the three months is estimated at around 32–36 euros.
