During the meeting, Trump celebrated the ‘great friendship’ forged with Xi Jinping. Crowds gathered behind the barriers along Lafayette Park, waving flags and holding up placards. The demonstrators were calling for religious autonomy and greater freedoms in Tibet, the Xinjiang ethnic region, Hong Kong and Taiwan. They chanted slogans such as “Xi Jinping must go” and “Shame! Shame on Xi Jinping!”. The chants grew louder as the ceremony progressed. Pro-Chinese demonstrators also took to the streets in Washington. Around 200 supporters of Xi gathered outside the hotel where the leader was staying to show their support. Opponents of Xi’s government gathered in the morning outside the Chinese embassy, before marching through the city. In the late afternoon, several hundred people gathered in a park near the White House to express their opposition to Xi.
