Milan, Oct. 1 (LaPresse) – Regeni’s parents are calling on Italy not to bow to al-Sisi’s Egypt, in an interview with la Repubblica. “We reiterate our full human solidarity with Nancy Guerra and we can understand her situation better than many others. Precisely for this reason, to protect her, our government must show strength, demonstrate that it will not give in to the regime’s blackmail. Italy now has the opportunity to show that it is uncompromising in asserting its national dignity, demanding that what was established in the judgment be carried out. This is the best protection for Ms. Guerra: knowing that she belongs to a state that does not abandon its citizens and does not bow to any blackmail, nor give in to any inducement or economic interest. As long as so-called realpolitik prevails over the protection of rights and dignity, no citizen will be safe in the world. A government that shows weakness toward a regime has already lost,” said Paola and Claudio Regeni, Giulio Regeni’s parents, to the newspaper la Repubblica, following the ruling on the kidnapping and killing of their son. Nancy Guerra, who was arrested for adultery, risks being unable to return to Italy with her daughter. Regeni’s parents said: “We are experiencing many different feelings and emotions; it was not easy to process and fully understand the significance of the ruling immediately. As we have said, we are satisfied that our efforts and those of the Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office have been rewarded and that justice has taken shape in a judgment. But that very judgment, in some way, crystallizes and makes, if possible, even more real all the evil in the world that befell Giulio. Hearing the word torture invoked alongside Giulio’s name continues to hurt. Even though that word can finally and unequivocally be attributed to those responsible for it. Unfortunately, however, we were not even given the time to process this satisfaction and finally be able to ‘breathe’. The statements by our government forced us to react immediately. First emotionally and now, also through the pages of your newspaper, publicly.”
