Turin, 2 Oct. (LaPresse) – The Russians “want the Ukrainians, especially those in the capital, to abandon the capital. In fact, that was what they were aiming for when the full-scale invasion began”. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made this statement to El País. “Putin’s tactic is to escalate the conflict as much as possible, and he will do so. And as Trump’s mid-term elections draw nearer, he will do so even more,” he explained. Zelensky links what is happening in Kyiv at the moment – which is enduring between 300 and 500 attacks a day, regardless of the time – to the upcoming elections in the United States. “In 2022, that was their objective: to get people to leave the capital to prove that, if you don’t have the capital, you don’t have a country,” but “our country is more than just the capital, and the capital remains strong,” he added. “These are not military targets and they are not on the front line,” Zelensky emphasised. “They are attacking to paralyse the city and prevent people from going to school or work, as their children cannot attend lessons or go to nursery because of all these attacks. They are trying to plunge Ukraine into chaos and, of course, it is understandable that people are becoming demoralised,” he said.
