Rome, Oct. 5 (LaPresse) – Yemen’s internationally recognized government, backed by Saudi Arabia, has announced the launch of a major military offensive to retake all areas of the country controlled by the Iran-backed Houthis. Government armed forces will intensify the offensive “until the country is liberated from the grip of terrorist militias,” Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi said in a televised address. A military spokesman then called on the Houthis to lay down their arms. According to Al Jazeera, Yemeni government forces have claimed 1,122 attacks against Houthi sites, artillery positions, rocket launchers and command and control centers. Spokesman Majid Abdullah Al-Nuzaili said the attacks involved the use of warplanes, drones, missiles, rockets, artillery and snipers. The attacks took place in the provinces of Saada, al-Jawf, Taiz and along the country’s coast, with the government claiming they caused the deaths of around 1,747 Houthi fighters.
