Frankfurt (Germany), 9 Oct. (LaPresse) – “I would like to dedicate this prize to all survivors of international crimes and to those who work for and defend international justice, whose compassion and courage continue to ensure that impunity does not prevail.” This was stated by the South African legal scholar Navi Pillay, winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, speaking in Nuremberg, where she was at the time of the announcement. Pillay recalled her commitment to the defence of human rights, from the struggle against apartheid in South Africa to the posts she has held at international judicial institutions and the United Nations. “In all these roles, I have embodied the promise to promote and protect the equal dignity of every human being and, in particular, the rights of women and children,” she said. She then referred to the United Nations Charter and the commitment to “save future generations from the scourge of war”. “We must continue this mission and keep that promise,” she emphasised. “It is the promise we owe to all victims and survivors of international crimes, to our children and to those who will inherit the world tomorrow,” she concluded.
