Rome, 12 Oct. (LaPresse) – The protest against the housing crisis and high rents has spread from Spain to neighbouring Portugal. Since Saturday, dozens of people have begun occupying Praça de D. João I in Porto, and now, according to Portuguese media reports, there are around 50 tents. The protesters are mainly young workers and students who are feeling the strain of rising house prices. Some say they rely on financial support from their parents to pay their rent. The protest began in Madrid following the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal, who subsequently died in the hospital where she had been admitted.
