Two Iranian officials, one of whom is a member of the Revolutionary Guards, told the New York Times that the expansion of Iran’s military targets also included US diplomats and personnel. The officials, who asked to remain anonymous as they were not authorised to speak publicly, confirmed the State Department’s reports regarding Iran’s plan to target American citizens. The officials defended the plan, pointing out that Israel and the United States had killed dozens of Iranian officials and some members of their families. In their view, they said, this made it “legitimate to target Americans”.
