Cairo (Egypt), 28 Oct. (LaPresse/AP) – Iran has sentenced the renowned film director Jafar Panahi to five years and one month’s imprisonment, following his return to the country earlier this year. The court in Tehran has also ordered the confiscation of Panahi’s “movable and immovable property”. This was reported by his lawyer, Mostafa Nili, to the reformist news website Emtedad in an interview given late yesterday evening. Nili did not specify what Panahi had been convicted of. However, the director, who returned to Iran in March, had previously been convicted of “propaganda against the system”. The verdict against Panahi was handed down on Monday. According to a person close to him, the director had not yet been arrested on Monday evening, but all his bank accounts had been frozen.
