At least four versions of the document have circulated, but, as reported by Brazilian media, only the last two were published directly by the former presidential candidate. The two earlier versions had been circulated by his allies, who attributed the text to Bolsonaro. Both described him as the “true elected president of Brazil”, despite his defeat by Lula in Sunday’s election. “I address the Brazilian people and the international community as the true elected president of Brazil,” read the opening of the versions circulated by his allies. Bolsonaro subsequently posted a version on his own account in which he described himself as the “true president”. He later edited the text and reposted it, adopting the expression “leader of Brazil”. In the latest version of the letter, Bolsonaro announces his intention to lead the Brazilian opposition from abroad and reiterates, without providing evidence, his claim that electoral fraud had taken place.
