Rome, 31 Oct. (LaPresse) – “For years, there have been organisations and politicians in Poland who want to destroy democracy and the rule of law.” This is the accusation levelled by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in an address to the nation broadcast this evening on the public television channel TVP, following the clashes outside the Constitutional Tribunal. According to Tusk, “the attack on the Court and its judges represents another stage in the process of destroying the rule of law in Poland by PiS”, the conservative opposition party Law and Justice, and by Presidents Andrzej Duda and Karol Nawrocki. “Is this greed, stupidity or treason? Ultimately, the result is the same, and it is no coincidence that they find support worldwide amongst pro-Russian forces and that today, in this conflict, they benefit from the support of an army of Russian bots on the internet,” said the Prime Minister. According to the Polish news agency Polska Agencja Prasowa, Tusk accused PiS of obstructing attempts to reform the Constitutional Tribunal and defended the police’s intervention during the clashes. “Shouting, lies and brawls cannot and will not be the source of law in Poland,” he declared, adding that “in a state governed by the rule of law, a politician cannot enter a court and issue orders or intimidate judges, not even if he is the President of the Republic”.
