North Korea, Seoul: ‘Even Pyongyang’s commitment to freeze nuclear weapons is good’

Milan, 22 September (LaPresse) – South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has said he would accept an agreement between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un whereby Pyongyang commits to freezing its nuclear weapons production rather than getting rid of them. Lee Jae Myung told the BBC that North Korea is producing 15-20 more nuclear weapons per year and that a freeze, as a ‘provisional emergency measure’, would for now be ‘a feasible and realistic alternative’ to denuclearisation. ‘As long as we do not give up on the long-term goal of denuclearisation, I believe there are clear advantages in getting North Korea to halt its nuclear and missile development,’ Lee Jae Myung said. ‘The question is whether we will persist in fruitless attempts towards the ultimate goal of denuclearisation or whether we will set more realistic goals and achieve some of them,’ Lee added.
