Rome, 27 September. (LaPresse) – ‘If the “no” vote wins and there is an alliance with the judiciary, it would not be a victory for the centre-left, but for the public prosecutors, and we would return, after many years of effort, to a Republic that is, in a certain sense, subjugated or conditioned by the power of the magistrates. And this would be a huge blow to the very political party claiming victory, as could be the left.’ So said Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, speaking at the 20th Ordinary Congress of the Union of Italian Criminal Chambers. “But it would be even more dangerous for the judiciary if we were to win. Because if the judiciary were to become “politicised” by entering into this debate with a non-technical, non-legal, but political connotation, and if it were to be defeated, it would be a political defeat. And political defeats are not painless; on the contrary, unfortunately, they come at a price. So my hope is to keep the tone low, as the President of the Republic has always hoped, but to give this referendum – which will take place, and I think it will be in the spring – its real meaning: that of a calm, civilised and technical discussion on what is an exclusively legal-institutional issue,” he concluded.
