Philippines, state of emergency declared for Typhoon Kalmaegi: at least 114 dead, 127 missing

Manila (Philippines), Nov. 6 (LaPresse) – Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a state of emergency after Typhoon Kalmaegi caused at least 241 deaths and missing persons in the central provinces of the country. Kalmaegi caused at least 114 deaths, mostly from drowning in flash floods, and 127 missing, many in the hard-hit central province of Cebu, before the tropical cyclone moved away from the archipelago on Wednesday. The typhoon’s surge, which affected nearly 2 million people, forced over 560,000 villagers to be displaced, with nearly 450,000 evacuated to emergency shelters. Marcos’ emergency declaration, made during a meeting with disaster officials to assess the typhoon’s impact, would allow the government to release emergency funds more quickly and prevent food hoarding and price increases.
