Inflation, Istat: “Prices up 25% since 2021”

Rome, Nov. 12 (LaPresse) – From October 2021 to October 2025, food prices in Italy increased by 24.9%, nearly eight percentage points higher than the overall consumer price index, which rose by 17.3% over the same period. This is what Istat reports.
The sharp rise in 2022–2023 was driven by the energy price shock, which significantly affected the unprocessed food sector—both directly, given the high weight of energy inputs, and indirectly, by pushing up the cost of key intermediate products such as fertilizers.
In the past two years, price growth has been more moderate, partly supported by the recovery of profit margins among agricultural enterprises. According to Istat, the exceptional increase in food prices in Italy can be traced to a combination of factors—mostly external—that led to steep rises in international prices of inputs used in the food sector. Domestic factors, on the other hand, played a more limited role, particularly in recent years.
