Madrid (Spain), 3 Dec. (LaPresse) – The Catalan pro-independence party Junts has not given in to the courtship of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who yesterday announced the approval in the Council of Ministers of a package of measures based on the requests put forward by Carles Puigdemont’s party. The socialist leader’s aim is to overcome the crisis in order to unblock the legislature, but the Junts spokesperson, speaking at a press conference in Barcelona, made it clear that the situation has not changed. Junts maintains the same “position,” said Miriam Nogueras. “There are no talks” with the socialists “and there will be no negotiations. We are at the same point as last week,” she added.
At the end of October, the Junts leadership decided to break the agreement signed in 2023 with the PSOE that had led to the investiture of Pedro Sanchez. The decision was ratified in the following days by party members. Leader Carles Puigdemont accused the socialists of failing to respect the agreements during the two years in government. The executive immediately downplayed the rupture with Junts and highlighted the promises made, such as the amnesty law. However, the Catalan pro-independence forces remained firm in their positions, preventing the government from relying on a majority in the Congress of Deputies for the approval of laws, effectively leading to a stalemate in the legislature. Yesterday, Sanchez gave two interviews, one to the Catalan radio station Rac-1 and one to the Catalan-language TV channel La 2 Cat, in which he denied having downplayed the break with Junts, assumed responsibility for the parts of the agreements that remained incomplete and announced a new package of measures in an attempt to overcome the crisis.
