Tourism, Istat: fewer arrivals but overnight stays up in the third quarter of 2025

Rome, Dec. 3 (LaPresse) – In the third quarter of 2025, the most important of the year for tourism, overnight stays in Italian accommodation establishments increased by 2.5% compared with the same period in 2024, while arrivals recorded a slight decline of 0.9%. This is what Istat reports in the provisional data from the “Movement of clients in accommodation establishments” survey, which shows an overall positive trend for tourism in the third quarter of 2025: compared with the same period in 2024, arrivals fall slightly (‑0.9%) but overnight stays show positive changes in all three months considered and grow by 2.5% overall in the quarter. In particular, for July, with 18.3 million arrivals and 79.1 million overnight stays, the monthly estimates indicate a 2.3% decrease in arrivals but a 3.1% increase in overnight stays compared with 2024. August, the peak tourist month of the year, with 19.1 million arrivals and 85.2 million overnight stays, shows the same pattern, with arrivals down 1.2% and overnight stays up 1.2%. September, the month with the lowest flows in the quarter (14.8 million arrivals and 52.4 million overnight stays), instead records growth in both variables: arrivals +1.1% and overnight stays +3.7%.
