Meloni: ‘We don’t always agree, but Mattarella is there to defend Italy’

Rome, 9 January (LaPresse) – “My relations with the Quirinale, and with the President of the Republic in particular, are excellent. I often read about this tension, these clashes, these difficulties… The President of the Republic and I do not always agree, of course, as he himself stated when he said, “I sign things I do not agree with”. It is not that we always agree on the merits, but there is one thing that makes all the difference to me: when it comes to defending Italy’s national interest, President Sergio Mattarella is there, and that is worth everything to me. Because being able to count on the head of state who, clearly especially in relations with foreign countries, even in the large industries and large countries we deal with, cares about and helps to strengthen Italy’s role and national interest, makes all the difference’. So said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the press conference at the beginning of the year in the Chamber of Deputies’ parliamentary groups’ hall. ‘Then, on domestic issues, I imagine that his personal positions are not always the same, but we both know what our roles are and we both work together very well, really. I often see stories in the press and the media that are very different from the reality I experience, and so I would not want attempts to create conflict with the Quirinale to be made for different interests,‘ she added. ’So I see it as fabrication, very often, and this fabrication leads to having to say that there are problems even when there are no problems. Then, when we disagree, we obviously talk about it, we always look for solutions, and we have always found them’.
