Justice, President of the Court of Cassation: ‘44,000 criminal appeals processed in 2025’

Rome, 30 January (LaPresse) – “In 2025, approximately 44,000 criminal appeals were filed with the Court, and 40,815 were resolved. The backlog at the end of the year is only 13,628 cases, which is what the Court can resolve in four months. We therefore have a Court of Cassation capable of resolving criminal cases in an average of 122 days. This figure is slightly higher than last year’s, but this is justified both by staff shortages and by a renewed focus on balancing the caseload in order to deal with the most complex cases with the utmost attention.” This was stated by the First President of the Court of Cassation, Pasquale D’Ascola, in his report on the administration of justice in 2025, during the inauguration of the judicial year in Rome, in the presence of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.
