Referendum, Nordio: ‘Abstentionism due to war? I am absolutely certain of victory.’

Rome, 5 March (LaPresse) – ‘Are we concerned about voter apathy in the referendum due to the war in the Middle East? I am absolutely certain of victory.’ So said Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio, speaking in the Transatlantico of the Chamber of Deputies. ‘Unfortunately, abstention is a phenomenon that is gradually developing in all forms of elections,’ explains the Minister of Justice. ‘It’s a shame because we fought so hard to have the right to vote, and it’s a shame that people don’t go. All opinions are legitimate as long as they are not based on fake news.’ Of course, Nordio adds, ‘if you win with a modest turnout, it’s not a good message for democracy. I’m not saying that voting is a duty, that might be a stretch, but it is an essential function for participating in public life.’
