Milan, 17 April (LaPresse) – The Executive Committee of Unatras, the umbrella organisation for national road haulage federations, meeting today in Rome, has decided to “declare a national stoppage of services and all transport activities, mandating the Presidency to set the dates and procedures for implementing the stoppage, which will be determined in accordance with the timetable laid down by the sector’s strike self-regulation code”. “This is the only and inevitable decision possible, long awaited by the sector, in the face of the government’s deafening silence during this dramatic phase caused by high fuel costs, which are effectively making it impossible for thousands of Italian companies to continue their freight transport operations,” states Unatras in a press release, explaining that ‘the measures taken so far by the government have proved insufficient to address the scale of the problem and, paradoxically, have ended up harming the professional road haulage sector, which not only ensures the continuity of goods transport but has also invested in environmental sustainability and road safety’. ‘It is inconceivable that the representative organisations affiliated with UNATRAS, which have always maintained a responsible stance towards the institutions and the country despite repeated warnings, have not even been summoned by the Government to initiate a substantive discussion on the extremely serious situation facing the sector,’ the association reiterates.
