Rome, 20 May (LaPresse) – ‘It is both an honour and a pleasure for me to have welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his delegation to Rome on a day that I do not think it is an exaggeration to describe as historic for relations between our two nations.’ So said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in joint statements to the press with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their meeting at Villa Pamphilj. “Today,” Meloni remarked, “marks his first bilateral visit to Italy. The last visit by an Indian Prime Minister on a bilateral mission prior to this dates back to 2000, a full 26 years ago. Today, with this visit, we are not only filling this gap, but together we are deciding to relaunch our relationship. This visit marks the culmination of a journey that we have built over recent years with perseverance and determination, to re-establish the bonds of our relationship and take it to the highest level ever. In 2023, I visited New Delhi, and on that occasion we launched our strategic partnership. The following year, in 2024, on the sidelines of the G20 in Brazil, we met with the Prime Minister and signed our Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029. Today, here in Rome, we are elevating our relationship to the level of a special strategic partnership, which is the highest ever achieved in relations between our two nations. We can therefore say without fear of contradiction that Italy and India are now closer than ever, and that our relations are now in a position to realise their full potential.”
