Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), 1 June (LaPresse/AP) – Polls have opened in Ethiopia for parliamentary elections which are expected to be won by the ruling party. A heavy military presence has been observed in the capital, Addis Ababa, whilst observers are calling for peaceful elections in what is Africa’s second most populous country and home to the African Union headquarters. Long queues began to form before the polls opened at 6 am, with voters eager to cast their ballots and make their voices heard. Ethiopians are electing over 500 members of the House of Representatives, who will subsequently vote to appoint the prime minister. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party is expected to win a majority of seats, paving the way for his re-election for another term. Around 50 million people, out of an estimated population of 130 million, are registered to vote. Voters are also electing members of local councils. Results are expected later today.
