Turin, 1 June (LaPresse) – There are ‘6,539’ people whose “appeals regarding inhuman or degrading treatment were upheld in 2025 by an Italian Supervisory Court. This is proof that the Italian prison system is outside the bounds of constitutional law. A figure that has been rising steadily over the years, in line with the increase in overcrowding in the country’s prisons. After all, almost all of these rulings stem from a failure to meet the minimum threshold of 3 square metres per person.” This was highlighted by Patrizio Gonnella, president of Antigone. The number of successful appeals was 3,115 in 2018, 4,347 in 2019, 3,382 in 2020, 4,212 in 2021, 4,515 in 2022, 4,731 in 2023 and 5,837 in 2024. In total, over eight years, it has been established that almost 37,000 people have had their right to dignified prison treatment violated.
