Rome, 17 June (LaPresse) – Sean Penn is set to return behind the camera to direct a new film about the events of 6 January 2021, the day of the storming of the US Capitol. According to The Guardian, the as-yet-untitled project is said to be particularly close to the heart of the actor and director, who will both write the screenplay and direct the film. The story will centre on a police officer involved in the violent insurrection that shook Washington, a role that could be played by Bradley Cooper. Filming is set to begin next year and the film will be produced by Warner Bros. Penn has closely followed the political fallout from the Capitol riot. In 2022, he attended one of the hearings of the House of Representatives’ select committee, explaining that he was there simply as a citizen interested in observing the proceedings. “We have all seen what happened on 6 January. Now we are waiting to see whether justice will take its course,” he said on that occasion. In the past, the director has made no secret of his criticism of Donald Trump, describing him, amongst other things, as “an enemy of humanity” and “a narcissist”.
