Madrid (Spain), 17 June (LaPresse) – The day of action by European trade unions scheduled for tomorrow in Madrid “is very important because it must mark a turning point; this is a time for workers to unite, not to compete, and to achieve this we need to change the policies being pursued in Europe. Inequalities have increased, wages and pensions are too low, profit levels are extremely high, and the necessary investments are not being made to secure a future for jobs, industrial systems and people’s quality of life”. This was stated by CGIL General Secretary Maurizio Landini in Madrid, at the press conference presenting the day of action entitled ‘For a democratic Europe: mobilisation for quality work, social justice and peace, against deregulation and austerity’. “There has been a process of privatisation – which is also underway in Italy – as a result of which the right to public healthcare, education and support for the most vulnerable and fragile is no longer guaranteed,” “Attempts are being made to privatise, to turn everything into a market”, and the European trade union movement “must represent an alternative perspective” and ensure that workers “are once again at the heart of policymaking, and that politics must return to addressing the issue of work”, Landini continued, emphasising that “we must move away from the logic of austerity”. “This means that now is not the time to increase spending on arms, but to invest in people’s rights and in innovation within our industrial and production processes,” remarked the CGIL secretary, stating that “we are running the risk of deindustrialisation”.
