Brussels, 19 June (LaPresse) – On migration policy, “we must now demonstrate concrete results that really make a difference to our citizens and move forward as soon as possible with solutions based on third countries”. This is stated in a letter sent to the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the members of the European Council, on the initiative of the Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, and the President of the Council, Giorgia Meloni, and signed by a total of 19 heads of state and government. The letter emphasises the need to act swiftly, making full use of the new European legal framework and implementing new third-country-based solutions to ensure a fairer and more effective management of the migration challenge. “We must make full use,” it stresses, “of the new opportunities and be ready to tackle the remaining obstacles effectively to ensure that the new solutions become a reality. We believe this is the most effective way to dismantle the business models of migrant smugglers, eliminate the incentives for irregular migration to Europe and ensure the return of those who have no right to remain in Europe. This must be done in accordance with EU law and international conventions, and in close cooperation with third countries.” Some initiatives “are already up and running, such as the cooperation between Italy and Albania. Other countries are now working to implement the new opportunities, including hubs in third countries. We will personally commit to ensuring that our visions become a reality. We encourage Member States willing to pursue such solutions and to collaborate with potential partners”, it is emphasised.
