Milan, 22 June (LaPresse) – Lionel Messi is cementing his place in football history: with his 1–0 goal against Austria in the 38th minute, he has become the all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup history. This is Messi’s fourth goal in this year’s World Cup. The Argentine star, who had previously missed a penalty, has now taken his tally to 17 goals, overtaking Germany’s Miroslav Klose. Messi has scored at least one goal in at least five editions of the tournament; the only other player to have done so is Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi’s first World Cup goal dates back as far as 2006, when, at just 18 years of age, he scored on his debut against Serbia and Montenegro from a Tevez assist. In 2014 in Brazil, he scored four goals, whilst in 2018 in Russia he managed just one. Finally, in 2022 in Qatar, ‘La Pulga’ found the net seven times, including twice in the final.
