Frankfurt (Germany), 26 June (LaPresse) – The Magdeburg court has sentenced Taleb Al Abdulmohsen to life imprisonment for the attack on the Christmas market on 20 December 2024, in which six people were killed and over 300 were injured. The court found him guilty, amongst other things, of murder, recognised the particularly serious nature of the offence and ordered his detention for public safety purposes upon completion of his sentence, should the conditions for this be met. The verdict is not yet final. According to the prosecution, the attack had been planned well in advance and was motivated primarily by personal reasons rather than ideological ones. A psychiatric expert diagnosed the defendant with narcissistic personality disorder and a marked need for attention. On 20 December 2024, Al Abdulmohsen drove a hire car weighing over two tonnes into the crowd at the Christmas market at speeds of up to 48 kilometres per hour. A nine-year-old boy and five women were killed in the attack. The man was arrested immediately after being detained inside the vehicle. A Saudi national, Al Abdulmohsen had been granted asylum in Germany many years ago, where he had qualified as a specialist doctor and, until shortly before the attack, had been working as a psychiatrist at a facility for offenders with mental health conditions in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.
