Washington (USA), 26 June (LaPresse) – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, together with the Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors to the United States, announced the signing of a framework agreement described as a first step towards peace following months of clashes between Israel and the Shia group Hezbollah. The officials did not disclose the details of the agreement, which was signed by Yechiel Leiter, Israel’s ambassador to the United States, and Nada Hamadeh, Lebanon’s ambassador to the United States. Hamadeh stated that the framework agreement “represents a first step towards restoring Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, achieving a permanent and definitive cessation of hostilities, enabling our people to return to their lands, and ensuring that all Lebanese can live in peace, security and prosperity”. Leiter said that the ultimate goal of the agreement is peace between the two countries. “A genuine peace, in which both countries will live in security and the sovereignty of Israel and Lebanon will be respected, honoured and protected,” said Leiter. “In this results-based trilateral framework agreement, Iran is out. Hezbollah is out. And the path to peace between Israel and Lebanon is open.”
