Peshawar (Pakistan), 27 June (LaPresse/AP) – An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale has struck parts of Pakistan and neighbouring Afghanistan, causing panicked residents across Pakistan to flee their homes, according to local authorities. There are currently no reports of casualties or damage. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the epicentre was located in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. The tremor was felt in Islamabad, as well as in the eastern province of Punjab and the north-western province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on the border with Afghanistan. It was also felt in Pakistani Kashmir. Pakistan lies along an active seismic zone and is frequently hit by earthquakes. In 2005, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake killed tens of thousands of people in Pakistan and Kashmir, the disputed Himalayan region divided between Pakistan and India and claimed by both countries.
