Milan, 27 June (LaPresse) – At the age of 36, Luca Dotto has decided to retire from competitive sport. He has chosen to do so at the Stadio del Nuoto in Rome, the temple of Olympic swimming, where he holds memories and emotions from his brilliant career. He is doing so during the 62nd IP Settecolli Trophy, an iconic event dear to the hearts of athletes worldwide. His final race was the 50-metre freestyle against his friend and long-time rival Marco Orsi – a thrilling head-to-head in the pool that saw them finish neck and neck after 45 metres, touching the wall simultaneously. Immediately after the lap of honour, embraced by the entire crowd at the Foro Italico, an emotional Dotto declared, “It’s not easy. Right now, I’m even struggling to think clearly. It’s a day you hope will never come. I wanted to round off the end of my career with the pleasure of a challenge and healthy competition. It was the most wonderful moment, especially in front of the Foro, where I’ve swum so many kilometres.”
