Washington (US), 29 June (LaPresse/AP) – The US Supreme Court has ruled that Lisa Cook, a member of the Federal Reserve Board, may retain her post, whilst rejecting Republican President Donald Trump’s attempt to remove her from office following allegations of mortgage fraud, which she denies. However, the Court has significantly expanded presidential powers, confirming the legitimacy of President Donald Trump’s dismissals of the heads of independent federal agencies. In Cook’s case, the Court voted 5–4 to reject the Trump administration’s attempt to remove her from office with immediate effect. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, Justice Brett Kavanaugh and the three liberal justices formed the majority. Cook had been appointed to the Fed’s Board of Governors by then-President Joe Biden, a Democrat.
