Frankfurt (Germany), 30 June (LaPresse) – Following the controversy over a message of support for the German national team, which was knocked out of the 2026 World Cup on penalties against Paraguay, Chancellor Friedrich Merz has returned to the subject with a new social media post, calling for support for the team even in defeat. “Let’s celebrate our successes together. And in defeat, let’s stand united. That’s what makes us strong. Those who wear the eagle on their chest deserve our support, not our mockery,” he wrote on X. The message comes after the strong criticism sparked by a previous post published overnight, immediately after Neuer and his teammates were knocked out. On that occasion, Merz praised the team’s performance despite their exit from the tournament: “Even though the elimination hurts, what a match. With your commitment and team spirit, you have thrilled our country. We are proud of you.” The Chancellor’s words provoked negative reactions both amongst fans and in German political circles, with many criticising him for praising a performance deemed disappointing and for failing to grasp the public’s discontent. According to Bild, the initial message had not been personally approved by Merz. The new statement therefore aims to clarify that the Chancellor’s intention was to express solidarity with the team and call for unity, not to celebrate the sporting performance.
