Rome, 2 July (LaPresse) – “How will the matter of the Rai supervisory board be resolved? All the commissioners have resigned – though I believe they will remain in office until new appointments are made – but this is merely a formality. I shall therefore wait for the parliamentary groups, together with the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, of course, to be invited to submit the names of the new members, after which we shall proceed in accordance with the regulations, namely the appointment of a new chair and so on.” So said Senate President Ignazio La Russa on his arrival at the traditional reception at Villa Taverna in Rome, which this year marks the 250th anniversary of American independence. “Is there a political rift to be resolved? Yes, to tell the truth I attempted mediation a few months ago but I am still awaiting a response, particularly from the opposition,” he recalled, “because my proposal for mediation – though it may not be to everyone’s liking, mind you – was quite straightforward. The issue is the presidency of RAI, and the opposition has asked for a ‘guaranteed’ president? I told the opposition to draw up a whole list of ‘guaranteed’ candidates to put forward to the majority, because if they’re to be ‘guaranteed’, they must agree on a name; and if they find one – and in my view it’s easy, given that the majority has said it’s willing – then at that point they’ll be appointed to the Board of Directors and elected president if there’s agreement. Replacing whom? Someone from the side that proposed them, that is, from the opposition. There are two from the opposition; if they want a ‘guaranteed’ chairperson – given that they haven’t reached an agreement – my proposal was: ‘Choose together a “guaranteed” candidate proposed by the opposition to replace one of their own.’ “It’s clear that this would result in a neutral chairperson and the balance of power within the board of directors would not be shifted numerically,” emphasises La Russa. “However, I don’t know; it seems that, as things stand, mediation is proving difficult. I’ve never received a reply, so I was quite surprised by the inability of the majority and the opposition to reach an agreement, and even more surprised to think that the solution might come ‘sic et simpliciter’ through a mass resignation if everyone doesn’t show some goodwill.”
