Rome, 9 July (LaPresse) – The pistol presented by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Giorgia Meloni, as well as to the other leaders attending the NATO summit in Ankara, was brought to Italy in accordance with all the required procedures. This has been confirmed by government sources. As revealed yesterday by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the recipient’s name is engraved on the weapon, and the gift was accompanied by a box of ammunition and a note from Erdogan exempting it from export controls. The pistol, the same sources explain, was therefore taken into custody directly in Ankara by personnel authorised to handle firearms, whilst upon return to Rome, procedures were initiated to declare its possession. The gift, as is the case with all those received by the Prime Minister, was subsequently registered and recorded at Palazzo Chigi.
