The meeting will focus on security guarantees, continued support for Ukraine and the coordination of initiatives to achieve a ‘just and lasting’ peace in the country. The following day, 14 July, at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, Merz will take part in the celebrations for France’s National Day. The two leaders will watch the traditional military parade from the VIP stand on the Champs-Élysées. The German government has also announced that the 26th Franco-German Ministerial Council and the Franco-German Defence and Security Council will take place in Germany on 17 July. On the evening of 16 July, Merz and Macron will meet for bilateral talks, followed by brief statements to the press, a meeting of the delegations and a working dinner. On the morning of 17 July, at 9.00 am, the Chancellor and the French President will chair the Franco-German Defence and Security Council at Noervenich Air Base, focusing on security and strategic cooperation. At the same time, ministers from both governments will hold bilateral meetings with their counterparts at Augustusburg Castle in Brühl.
