Milan, 11 July (LaPresse) – “A veritable ecological disaster is unfolding in Piedmont: the provisional total area affected by the fires ravaging the region has reached the dramatic figure of between 800 and 900 hectares burnt across the provinces of Turin, Vercelli, Novara and Verbano-Cusio-Ossola.” This is according to a statement from the Piedmont Regional Government. “The particularly hot spell, with high temperatures persisting for long periods from late May to early July, combined with low rainfall, has created conditions conducive to the outbreak of forest fires. The recent heatwave that has affected Piedmont since early July, with record maximum temperatures recorded on Wednesday 8th, was also accompanied by strong northerly winds, which further increased the risk of forest fires. The forest fire bulletins issued by ARPA’s Operations Centre in recent days have accurately reflected the conditions, with the risk having risen since the start of July; on the 8th, conditions deteriorated further, with a widespread high risk due to high temperatures and strong foehn winds at higher altitudes.
