Milan, 14 July (LaPresse) – Last month’s record-breaking heatwave caused thousands of deaths across Western Europe, making it one of the continent’s deadliest climate-related disasters. According to an analysis by Politico, preliminary official mortality data and estimates by researchers from the six hardest-hit countries indicate at least 14,000 more deaths during the period of extreme heat than the average for previous years. The heatwave, which began around 18 June and lasted until 1 July, broke all records in several countries. The figures analysed by Politico include around 2,000 excess deaths in France, 1,740 in Belgium, 6,800 in Germany and 480 in the Netherlands, as well as 810 deaths specifically linked to the heat in Spain and around 2,200 heat-related deaths in the United Kingdom.
