Bunia (Democratic Republic of the Congo), 15 July (LaPresse/AP) – Confirmed cases of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have reached 2,011, with 754 deaths. This is according to government figures released overnight, in what the authorities describe as the fastest-growing outbreak ever recorded. According to figures from the Congolese Ministry of Health, 753 people are still in isolation or hospitalised, whilst 366 have recovered. Contact tracing remains a challenge, with coverage of exposed individuals still standing at 67 per cent. Since 15 May, the Central African country has been battling the Ebola outbreak caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus. Two months on from its start, the outbreak continues to spread faster than health authorities can keep track of, despite an increasingly extensive response. At least 80 per cent of new cases stem from unknown chains of transmission, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Tuesday.
