Flavio Cobolli gave it his all to secure his place in the round of 16 at the ‘Cincinnati Open’, the seventh ATP Masters 1000 event of the season (prize money: $9,415,725), which is being played on the hard courts of the Lindner Family Tennis Centre in the Ohio metropolis (combined with a WTA 1000 event broadcast live on SuperTennis). The 24-year-old Roman, ranked 10th and the seventh seed, followed up his three-set victory in his opening match (directly in the second round) over Serbian Miomir Kekmanovic (ATP No. 66) with a 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 win in the third round, in just under two and a half hours of hard-fought tennis, against the Belgian Alexander Blockx, ranked 32nd in the ATP and the 28th seed. In the ninth game of the deciding set, Flavio was two points away from defeat, but closed out the match with a run of four consecutive games. In the end, the Italian recorded 31 winners against 31 unforced errors (compared to the Belgian’s tally of 39 to 20).
