Turin, Aug. 18 (LaPresse) – Wassim al-Assad, cousin of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, has been sentenced to death after being found guilty of crimes committed during the nearly 14 years of war in the country. The Fourth Criminal Court of Damascus issued the sentence today, finding Wassim al-Assad guilty of offenses including premeditated murder and torture. The Sana news agency reported this. The sentence is the latest in a series of judicial measures against figures from Assad’s former regime accused of crimes committed during the war in Syria. Last week, the Damascus court sentenced Bashar al-Assad and his brother Maher al-Assad to death in absentia. Assad and Maher fled to Russia after insurgents stormed Damascus. Assad’s maternal cousin Atef Najib was also sentenced to death for offenses including murder, torture and crimes against humanity.
