Turin, 19 Aug. (LaPresse) – “Perhaps if, instead of talking so much, we took action, people would take more of an interest. And many of us are doing just that. Our secretary,” Matteo Salvini, “who was re-elected a year ago, has taken the party from 5 per cent to 34 per cent – not the other way round, as some seem to have forgotten. And in Veneto and Calabria, the polls predicted the opposite of what actually happened.” Silvia Sardone, MEP and federal deputy secretary of the Lega, said this in an interview with the Corriere della Sera. “It goes without saying that Salvini will continue to do his job and that we expect a large turnout and plenty of ideas at Pontida, because it is our last historic gathering before the vote. It’s not just a show,” she explains. However, the northern regions are calling for a return to a Lega that does not focus solely on ‘Vannacci-style’ issues. “We have always fought for security, the fight against crime and a ‘no’ to illegal immigration ever since Bossi’s time; it has always been a central issue for us. And, unlike Vannacci, we look forward, not back, as with the issues of patriarchy or femicide,” Sardone continues. “Autonomy and fiscal federalism – our objectives for the past 30 years – are becoming national laws precisely thanks to a Lega that represents the whole of Italy and under this secretary. We have the Minister for the Economy, Giorgetti, and the Minister for Regional Autonomy, Calderoli; all our ministers are from Lombardy, and we have regional presidents,” he emphasises. “I believe that everyone can do a great deal to advance our causes. If we want to, we can even set up specific associations, canvass the local area; everyone can take action within their own sphere. If, however, we want a change in the decision-making procedures for putting forward candidates or amendments to the party constitution, then that is another matter. I insist: anyone who wants to can win votes,” he adds.
