Rome, Aug. 19 (LaPresse) – “It is abundantly clear that we find ourselves in an extraordinary situation that requires equally extraordinary solutions through appropriate measures that protect workers and ensure the future of the city of Taranto and the industrial fabric of Southern Italy,” and “we appeal to you, Mr. President, so that a divided and battered region may resume its path as a community through strong engagement by institutions at every level to guarantee the right to health and work.” Just a few days before the opening of the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, representatives of the workers at Acciaierie d’Italia, Ilva (under special administration), and subcontractors, along with the metalworkers’ unions Fim, Fiom, Uilm, and USB—have written to President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, expressing the hope that “this cry for help of ours may be received positively and may serve as an opportunity for a meeting with you, in your capacity as guarantor of the institutions and representative of national unity.” “As workers’ representatives, we believe it is essential to bring directly to your attention the dramatic situation that Taranto has been facing for years now, with thousands of workers forced to live with a state of uncertainty that today poses a real risk of turning into an unprecedented social time bomb,” the metalworkers emphasize, “which is why we ask you, with respect and trust, for the opportunity to be received and heard, so that the workers’ voices may be heard at the highest levels of government.”
