Migrants, Schlein: “Suspending Schengen would be a spectacular boomerang”

Milan, 20 Aug. (LaPresse) – “The backlash against Giorgia Meloni’s propaganda stunt of suspending the Schengen Agreement against Spain has been spectacular. And so, hot on the heels of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Finland and Sweden have also declared that they are resuming the return to Italy of migrants who entered Europe via our country. When I said that, with regard to Ceuta, Meloni had set a dangerous precedent for Europe – but above all for Italy – this is exactly what I meant.” So said the secretary of the PD, Elly Schlein. “What makes matters worse is that, due to her blind ideology, Meloni has never taken up the most important battle to be fought in Brussels in the national interest: that of European solidarity, including on the issue of reception. To overcome the unfair Dublin criterion of the ‘first country of entry’ and finally establish that whoever enters Italy enters Europe, and that every EU country must play its part in reception. We are talking about people, not parcels. And they cannot be shunted around for the sake of cynical political calculation. It is ridiculous that Meloni claims to have changed the tune in Europe, when in reality she was doing a favour for those countries that do not want to share the responsibility for receiving those entering Europe via Italy and are only too happy to discuss the failed centres in Albania: inhumane, illegal, and which have even remained empty,” concludes Schlein.
